Hublot reveals concrete timepiece as tribute to NYC Co-designed with street artist Tristan Eaton Celebrates collaboration at Lower East Side event !
Hublot announced its latest collaboration and timepiece, the Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph Concrete Jungle—the brand’s first concrete timepiece—as a tribute to New York City co-designed by visionary street artist and former New Yorker, Tristan Eaton. In celebration of the partnership, Managing Director of Hublot of America, Jean-François Sberro, hosted a three-part event in downtown Manhattan with the artist to reveal the new watch.
Beginning with a cocktail in the glass enclosed Penthouse at the Hotel on Rivington, Hublot welcomed journalists and art cognoscenti to Manhattan’s Lower East Side neighborhood where many notable artists have found a haven for their work, discovered their inspiration, and created their most important pieces. Surrounded by immersive visual projections of Eaton’s works and imagery of the Concrete Jungle timepiece, guests enjoyed themselves in the company of the acclaimed artist. Directly following, guests were invited to the recently opened Café Medi for a seated dinner. After dinner guests made their way through the graffiti covered doors to the “underground” lounge JIA for an afterparty to celebrate in true “city that never sleeps” fashion into the late hours of the night. Guests enjoyed music, provided by DJ Doug Rand, and celebrated throughout the evening.
Midway through the cocktails at the top of the evening, Jean-François Sberro was joined on stage by Tristan Eaton for a question and answer session to discuss the genesis of the collaboration, the brand’s first concrete timepiece, as well as Eaton’s creative process.
Jean-François Sberro, Managing Director, Hublot of America, commented, « In an homage to one of the world’s most iconic cities, Hublot has continued to fulfill its mission to « Be First, Be Different, Be Unique » by developing a watch with actual concrete elements incorporated in the bezel. We are honored to have worked with Tristan Eaton on this timepiece, and he has elevated the « Concrete Jungle » timepiece with his signature mosaic artistry on the caseback. With a limited run of 50 pieces, the brand is excited to be able to offer this reference to a select group of buyers who appreciate New York City for its liveliness, its tenacity, and its inspiration. »
Tristan Eaton, New York City street artist, shared, “’When I moved to New York City it was an unknown beast, as beautiful as it was intimidating. I was there alone with no money, no friends and no choice but to charge into the concrete jungle, armed with paint and ready for a fight! 18 years later, the City has made me the artist I am today. Paying tribute to this gorgeous metropolis is a welcome opportunity, but it must be done right. A city this monumental deserves a work as equally as strong and beautiful. Hublot is one of the only brands worthy to partner on this tribute to my time in the concrete jungle.”
The event also served as occasion to unveil the Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph Special Edition Concrete Jungle. Hublot wanted to create a piece that was a tribute to New York City and found that “Concrete Jungle” would be a fitting name; both the nickname for the city, as well as naming an actual material component of the watch. In following the brand’s mission to “Be First, Be Different, Be Unique,” the latest style will incorporate real elements of concrete in the bezel. The watch’s case back features Eaton’s signature collage technique that creates a colorful motif of the Statue of Liberty, named Liberty (2016). The subject was first explored in Eaton’s original piece, Liberty, painted in September of 2012 at the corner of Mulberry Street and Canal Street in New York City’s Little Italy neighborhood. Liberty serves as a perfect example of how Eaton’s works incorporate the “Art of Fusion,” an important aspect to Hublot’s brand identity. The “Concrete Jungle” Classic Fusion Aerofusion timepiece is limited to 50 pieces, available for purchase at Hublot New York boutiques on Madison Avenue and Fifth Avenue for $19,500.
ABOUT HUBLOT
Hublot, meaning, “A different way to progress,” say those who know this unique Swiss luxury watch company, where each and every moment moves forward to create the future at breathtaking speed. A dream initiated and developed by Hublot’s Chairman Jean-Claude Biver with CEO Ricardo Guadalupe when they took control of the brand in 2004. These two men are responsible for turning the Hublot brand into a genuine success story in which the Big Bang, Classic Fusion, and MP Masterpiece Collection represent the symbols of a constantly evolving tradition. This year marks the 10th Anniversary of ALL BLACK, a concept created by Hublot to create a watch with blackened hands, indexes, dial and date, rendering a timepiece not explicitly about telling time.
From in-house watch complications, including award-winning minute repeaters and tourbillons, to revolutionary materials such as patented and scratch resistant Magic Gold, colored Texalium carbon fiber, and transparent sapphire cases to world class collaborations such as Ferrari, FIFA™ World Cup, and Italia Independent, Hublot characterizes itself through the “Art of Fusion” philosophy, bringing tradition into the future.
