Functional and versatile, the diving watch is arguably the sport-chic category worn most often in everyday life. Here is the essential background to understand it, followed by what we cover of its news.
A chronology of the underwater conquest. The first genuinely water resistant watches appeared as early as the 1920s and 1930s with screw down cases. But it was in the early 1950s, with the rise of scuba diving, that modern diving watches emerged, fitted with a rotating bezel that made it possible to track immersion time. Several pioneering models from this period have become absolute references: the Rolex Submariner and the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, to name but two.
Well defined codes. A true diving watch combines sufficient water resistance, a unidirectional bezel that can only reduce the displayed time as a safety measure, excellent readability and high performance luminescent material. The international standard ISO 6425 governs the designation and the associated tests.
A style that has become universal. Beyond its practical use, the diving watch has established itself as a go anywhere watch, worn as easily with a suit as in casual dress. A style embodied by Sean Connery in “Dr. No” in 1962, who wears his Rolex Submariner ref. 6538 as easily with a tuxedo as with swimming trunks. This versatility explains its presence across almost all luxury watch brands.
