What if a watch could be operated differently? What if its mechanics no longer simply worked away beneath the dial, but became tangible in the very gestures of the person wearing it?

It is around this idea that Nicolas Theil has created HIVEMASTER, the first watch from THEIL, an independent house born in Paris. This is a watch that does not merely aim to tell the time, but to rethink the relationship between the wearer, the object and its mechanics.
At the heart of the concept lies SYNC MOTION, an exclusive case complication developed by Nicolas Theil. Here, the bezel is no longer just the border between dial and case. It becomes a genuine mechanical component, built directly into the architecture of the watch.
Paired with a crown positioned at 12 o’clock, it forms a dual control interface that brings together time setting, winding and date adjustment in a single interaction designed around the gesture.
With HIVEMASTER, THEIL makes the way a watch is used an integral part of its design.
Nicolas Theil, from design to watchmaking

HIVEMASTER is not a break in Nicolas Theil’s career. Rather, it is the natural extension of more than fifteen years of exploration at the crossroads of design, fashion and leather goods.
Trained between Paris and Tokyo, Nicolas Theil worked notably with Giambattista Valli and then Jean Paul Gaultier before founding his own brand in 2011.
His path has been shaped by prototyping, experimentation and innovation.
With THEIL, this approach now finds a new field of expression: watchmaking.
The watch proves a particularly fitting object for pursuing this line of thought. It combines a precise function with a complex architecture, while being made to be worn, handled and looked at every day.
Which leads to the question that seems to guide HIVEMASTER: how do you give an object a strong identity when its function directly shapes its form?
Nature as architecture
The name HIVEMASTER immediately evokes a collective organisation, structured and interdependent.
For this first creation, Nicolas Theil drew inspiration from the structures and organisation of living things. The aim is not to copy nature literally, but to observe its principles and transpose them into a mechanical object.
This approach is most evident on the dial.
Its hexagonal honeycomb-inspired pattern creates an arrangement built on repetition, geometry, flow and interdependence. It is a structure that suggests both strength and harmony.
The relief of the pattern catches the light as the wrist moves. The dial surface thus constantly changes in appearance, gradually revealing its depth.
This geometry does not stand alone, however. It echoes throughout the whole watch.
Case, bezel and controls are conceived as parts of one and the same system, in which every form serves a function.
SYNC MOTION, the gesture as interface

It is really with SYNC MOTION that HIVEMASTER asserts its singular character.
Developed by Nicolas Theil, this exclusive mechanical system creates a direct link between the wearer’s gesture and several of the watch’s functions.
The crown at 12 o’clock and the rotating bezel are the two elements of this control interface.
The bezel thus takes on a new role.
Usually regarded as an essentially aesthetic or functional element depending on the model, here it becomes an active part of the mechanism. It helps transmit the gesture to the watch’s functions.
The appeal of SYNC MOTION lies precisely in this continuity between architecture and use.
The mechanical movement is no longer just an invisible reality driving the hands. It becomes perceptible through the action applied to the watch.
Time setting, winding and date adjustment are thus united around a single principle: turning the gesture into a mechanical language.
A watch conceived as a system
This philosophy carries through the proportions and the various components of HIVEMASTER.
The 316L stainless steel case measures 38.5 mm in diameter, a size that lets the architecture keep an assertive presence while remaining restrained.
The crown at 12 o’clock is naturally one of the most distinctive features of this construction.
It alters the traditional perception of the watch and contributes to its visual balance. Above all, it is one of the entry points to the SYNC MOTION system.
A scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment protects the dial and its indications.
The watch displays hours, minutes, seconds and the date.
The whole is completed by the Hivelink bracelet in 316L stainless steel, whose geometric vocabulary extends that of the case all the way to the wrist.
The honeycomb as a graphic language

The dial is arguably the element that most immediately expresses the philosophy of HIVEMASTER.
The honeycomb-inspired motif structures the surface with a succession of hexagonal shapes. Its relief lets light break up and travel across the dial whenever the wrist changes position.
This construction gives the dial a three-dimensional presence.
The five dial versions offered in the collection allow this architecture to be varied without altering its fundamental principle.
The faceted indexes and the hands are coated with green Luminova, improving legibility in low light while adding a further visual signature to the piece.
Swiss mechanics at the heart of the concept
Behind this innovative architecture, THEIL has opted for a Swiss ETA 2824 automatic movement.
It drives the hours, minutes, seconds and date.
The stated power reserve is 38 hours.
Yet it is the pairing with SYNC MOTION that represents the real mechanical interest of HIVEMASTER. The movement is not considered separately from the case: it is the interaction between the two that gives the concept its full meaning.
This approach reflects the thinking of Nicolas Theil, for whom function should never be separated from form.
The watch thus becomes a coherent system in which the movement, the case and the control interface all contribute to a single experience.
Three lines for a first collection

For its entry into the world of watchmaking, THEIL offers HIVEMASTER in three lines: Origine, Signature and Révélation.
This first collection explores different expressions of the concept, from steel to more precious and spectacular interpretations.
The range features steel, steel and gold, black PVD, hammered steel set with diamonds, and a sapphire case.
Recommended retail prices range from €3,900 to €27,000.
The variety of materials does not, however, call into question the founding principle of the collection: preserving the relationship between architecture, gesture and mechanics.
HIVEMASTER Origine, the first expression of the concept
In its Origine version, HIVEMASTER features a 38.5 mm case in 316L stainless steel.
The black dial carries the honeycomb motif, with steel indexes and hands coated with green Luminova.
An anti-reflective sapphire crystal protects the display, while the Hivelink bracelet in 316L steel carries the design through to the wrist.
The Swiss ETA 2824 automatic movement offers a 38-hour power reserve.
Water resistance is rated at 30 metres, or 3 ATM.
The Origine version is therefore the most direct expression of what THEIL has to offer: a 38.5 mm mechanical object in which case design and the act of operating the watch are inseparable.
A limited first collection

The HIVEMASTER collection comes in several architectures and materials, with a clearly stated ambition to build a whole universe rather than a single watch.
The Origine version presented here is limited to 100 numbered pieces.
This limited run underlines the experimental nature of THEIL’s first foray into watchmaking. Nicolas Theil does not simply apply his designer’s vocabulary to an existing watch: he builds a language around a new relationship between form, mechanics and the wearer.
With SYNC MOTION, that ambition takes concrete shape.
When design meets mechanics
In the end, HIVEMASTER is less a watch designed around a style than a watch designed around an idea.
The idea that the gesture can become an integral part of the mechanism.
And the idea that an object’s architecture can flow from its function rather than merely dress it.
The honeycomb motif, the crown at 12 o’clock, the active bezel and the Hivelink bracelet all serve this same quest for coherence.
That is what gives HIVEMASTER its distinctive character.
For its first watch, THEIL has chosen not to enter the world of horology through traditional codes. The house prefers to question the relationship between the object and the person who wears it.
With SYNC MOTION, the watch is handled differently. With its architecture inspired by living things, it is seen differently.
And with HIVEMASTER, Nicolas Theil ultimately offers a very personal definition of watchmaking: an ongoing dialogue between design, material, mechanics and movement.
