Some watches simply tell the time. The Masterlink Métiers d’Art Atelier Edition goes further: it gives time a physical presence, hammered facet by facet, until it creates a living metallic surface that no photograph can fully capture, and of which no two pieces will ever be exactly identical.
This limited edition of the Masterlink, produced in only 25 pieces in each of the three colors, entrusts its nickel silver dial to the expertise of a seasoned artisan at the Gerald Charles Atelier in Geneva. Through hundreds of meticulously controlled strikes, he transforms a flat surface into a material that seems to converse directly with the light.
The Masterlink: an icon carved in steel and built on asymmetry

Before discussing the hammering, it is worth dwelling on what makes the Masterlink the ideal canvas for this exercise. This watch is at once a feat of engineering and the expression of a genuine watchmaking philosophy.
Gérald Charles Genta, one of the most celebrated watch designers of the 20th century, did not see steel as a compromise, but as a noble material. At a time when the prestige of fine watchmaking was measured mainly in gold and diamonds, Mr. Genta was among the first to champion the idea that a steel watch, perfectly designed and impeccably executed, could embody the highest ideals of haute horlogerie. The Masterlink today represents the most accomplished expression of this conviction.
Its 38 × 38 mm case presents a square, compact silhouette, more understated than that of its predecessor, the Maestro. At just 7,99 mm thick, the Masterlink is remarkably slim, even though its movement measures only 2,67 mm.
This slimness is the result of many technical choices, among them the integration of a screw-down crown, usually synonymous with added thickness, without increasing the height of the case. Water resistance reaches 100 meters.
“Our goal was to let simplicity conceal complexity. Designing a watch where you feel everything without seeing anything is a true balancing act.” Federico Ziviani, CEO
The bracelet: the most complex detail you will never notice

The Masterlink is the first Gerald Charles watch fitted with an integrated bracelet. This architecture reveals just how precisely every element had to fit together.
The Maestro’s iconic asymmetric case features a distinctive curve at 6 o’clock, nicknamed the “smile.” Designing an integrated bracelet around this shape meant creating a bracelet whose two sides are, in reality, different from one another.
At 6 o’clock, the central links follow the curve of the case before gradually straightening. At 12 o’clock, they instead extend the straight upper line of the case.
No screw is visible. The butterfly clasp is hidden inside the final links, and the pushers are integrated there as well. Size adjustment is done by half-links to achieve a precise fit.
The result forms a single, fluid surface, the fruit of a particularly complex construction.
This concept originates in a creation that long remained confidential: the Sarawak, an integrated-bracelet watch set with diamonds and rubies created by Mr. Genta in 2007 for the royal family of Sarawak. Unknown to the general public until 2024, it is one of the direct ancestors of the Masterlink.
The dial: where precision meets artisanal craftsmanship

This is where the Masterlink Atelier Edition sets itself apart from previous versions of the collection.
Each dial is hammered by hand, individually, by one of Gerald Charles’s experienced artisans within the Maison’s Atelier in Geneva. The process is neither mechanized nor semi-automated. It rests on a true Métier d’Art, requiring long experience, perfectly controlled force, and an intimate knowledge of how the metal reacts to successive impacts.
The choice of nickel silver as the dial material answers a precise intention. Harder to machine than the brass generally used in watchmaking, it requires longer production times, puts more strain on tools, and leads to a higher reject rate.
Gerald Charles nonetheless chose this material because quality is not negotiated at the end of the process: it begins with the selection of the raw material.
Through a succession of carefully controlled strikes, the artisan gradually sculpts a texture made of hundreds of tiny facets. As a result, no two dials are identical. Each becomes a unique object, shaped by the decisions and the gesture of a single pair of hands.
This finish profoundly changes the relationship between the dial and the light. A traditional sunburst dial reflects light in a single central direction. The hammered dial, by contrast, diffuses and captures it simultaneously across its entire surface.
As the watch moves on the wrist, the reflections appear, disappear, and shift. The dial thus never shows exactly the same face twice.
“The idea was to establish a different relationship between the watch and the light through a dial surface shaped by the artisan’s hand.” Gerald Charles creative team
No applied index interrupts this surface. This choice preserves all the richness of the hammered texture and lets the light travel freely across the dial. The dial thus becomes the central visual element of the watch.
The dialogue between engineering and craftsmanship

Beyond its aesthetics, the Masterlink Atelier Edition rests on a meeting between two worlds.
On one side, the Masterlink is defined by its technical precision, its controlled geometries, its invisible construction, and the rigor of its execution. On the other, the hammered dial deliberately introduces the visible and unique mark of the artisan’s hand.
Mechanical perfection rests on the absolute precision of forms and assemblies. Artisanal perfection, by contrast, embraces the irregularities inherent in the human gesture, making them a component of the work.
The Masterlink Atelier Edition thus establishes a dialogue between the engineer and the artisan, between the mastery of steel and the apparent spontaneity of the texture. It pairs a watch designed with extreme precision with a dial whose making demands patience, experience, and mastery of gesture.
