La Carrera Panamericana 2016, sponsored and officially timed by TAG Heuer, Swiss Avant-Garde watchmaker since 1860, kept all its intrigue, intensity, pressure and performance. TAG Heuer drivers – Laura and Hilaire Damiron – did a fantastic race and took the first place.
From the 13th to the 20th, 70 crews crisscrossed the country through the mountainous Mexican roads – the region of the Sierra Gorda, the State of Michoacán, the snowcapped Volcano and the Zacatecas region – offering to drivers and spectators breathtaking views.
The route is certainly a challenge for both drivers and cars and not everybody reached the final line at Durango. Whether it was the mechanic or the mental that cracked, the legendary race did not fail to maintain its reputation of being the “ultimate road race”.
The last day covered over 689 km, split between 14 extremely technical stages including 7 speed stages, out of which the famous devil backbone – ‘el Espinazo del Diablo’ – the most difficult speed section of the event. A narrow road with a long series of curves bordered by a cliff of over 700m depth on the left and the mountain on the other side. In this stage only your trust in your co-pilot and a strong concentration can get you out of there in one piece.
The competition was intense and full of suspense; during all the week the first position on the podium was a face to face between 2 amazing crews: Hilaire & Laura Damiron and Emilio Velasquez & Javier Marin.
Laura and Hilaire Damiron fought for the 1st place, they showed tenacity and endurance, and after 5 victories out of 7 they lifted the trophy of La Carrera Panamericana 2016 with the TAG Heuer Connected Watch on their wrist.
Congratulations to our friends of the brand, Hilaire and Laura Damiron, who did not crack under the pressure, who gave it all and faced the crazy challenge during 7 days. They continue to follow their dreams with determination, free spirit and passion. It is just the second professional rally for Laura and she is now a big opponent for most of the senior co-pilots of the race!
TAG Heuer created an exclusive Carrera Panamericana dial only available for the “TAG Heuer Connected” watch. The design showcases the original itinerary of the race, as well as Juan-Manuel Fangio’s car, famous car racing pilot who helped to create the legend as he participated to the race.
