The Series 8 cultivates the art of subtraction
In watchmaking, evolution does not necessarily come from adding a function, a complication or an extra decorative element. It can equally mean reworking the volumes, refining the lines and seeking better balance on the wrist. This is precisely the path CITIZEN has taken with these two new Series 8 watches.
The collection first appeared in 2008, built around a case architecture made up of eight elements. Discontinued in 2014, it returned in 2021 in a renewed form, now devoted to contemporary mechanical watchmaking. This new generation preserves what CITIZEN calls the “aesthetic of subtraction”: stripping away the superfluous in order to better emphasise the volumes, the edges and the presence of the metal.

The number eight also carries a symbolic dimension. Placed horizontally, it evokes infinity and the link the Japanese manufacture wishes to establish between its watchmaking heritage and its current vision of the mechanical watch.
A Series 8 under the 40 mm mark
The main change brought by the NB6080-51W and NB6084-50A references lies in their dimensions. Their steel case measures 39.5 mm in diameter for just 10.4 mm in thickness.
On paper, the reduction may seem modest. On the wrist, however, it should noticeably change the perception of the watch. The Series 8 retains its assertive architecture and its angular lines, but gains in discretion, comfort and probably in versatility.

By way of comparison, the Series 8 “831” Ice Blue previously featured on Passion Horlogère measured 40 mm in diameter for 11.6 mm in thickness. The newcomers thus shed around 1.2 mm in height, a welcome gain for an automatic watch fitted with an integrated metal bracelet.

CITIZEN does not, however, seek to erase the collection’s personality. The case remains built around several distinct components, carefully polished and brushed. An octagonal lower bezel receives a circular upper element, creating a succession of planes and visual breaks characteristic of the Series 8. The brand states that this construction relies on five elements assembled and worked separately.
Japanese inspiration at the heart of the dial
Both new models take up the geometric motif that has become one of the collection’s signatures. The central section of the dial combines a stylised interpretation of Tokyo’s night-time skyline with a chequerboard pattern.

The latter recalls the Japanese ichimatsu motif, traditionally associated with prosperity and continuity. It is not simply a matter of applying a traditional ornament to a contemporary watch: CITIZEN seeks instead to transform this cultural reference into a modern, structured and instantly recognisable texture.
Telling the time is entrusted to applied indexes and faceted hands. Their luminescent treatment ensures good legibility as the light fades, while a date window sits at 3 o’clock. The dial thus retains enough relief to catch the eye without becoming needlessly busy. The various surfaces, the metal indexes and the broad hands naturally extend the architectural design of the case.
Two interpretations, two personalities
The NB6080-51W reference adopts a configuration entirely rendered in steel tones. Its textured green dial adds a touch of deep colour, particularly well suited to the urban, sport-chic spirit of the Series 8.
This variant seems the more contemporary of the two. The green enlivens the dial without breaking the visual unity created by the steel case and bracelet. The reflections produced by the geometric motif should make its hue shift depending on the watch’s orientation and the intensity of the light.

The NB6084-50A is more dressy. Its silvery dial, almost white under certain lighting, is paired with yellow-gold-coloured plating applied to the bezel and the crown guards. The hands, the indexes and the frame of the date window also take up these warm tones.
The whole evokes a classic two-tone aesthetic, but reinterpreted through the sharper, more modern lines of the Series 8. This version can thus accompany formal attire while retaining a personality assertive enough for more casual wear.
The calibre 9051 facing the demands of everyday life
Both watches are powered by the mechanical calibre 9051, designed and manufactured by CITIZEN. This automatic-winding movement can also be hand-wound. It runs at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of about 42 hours.
Its stated accuracy is between -10 and +20 seconds per day. The movement also features a stop-seconds function for more precise time-setting, a date display and 24 jewels. It can be observed through the transparent case-back.

One of its main qualities lies in its resistance to magnetic fields of up to 16,000 A/m. This feature makes full sense in an everyday environment filled with smartphones, computers, tablets and electronic accessories liable to disturb the operation of a traditional mechanical movement.
CITIZEN states that this protection allows the movement to retain its performance when it is at a minimum distance of about one centimetre from a device generating a magnetic field. The calibre 9051 is thus conceived as a traditional mechanism adapted to contemporary uses.
A genuine everyday watch
The sapphire crystal benefits from an anti-reflective treatment, while water resistance is stated at 10 bar, or 100 metres. These characteristics make everyday use conceivable, without having to reserve the watch solely for dressy occasions.

The integrated steel bracelet directly extends the lines of the case. It fully contributes to the design of the watch and reinforces its sport-chic personality, while creating a visual continuity between the lugs, the links and the various brushed surfaces.
With their contained diameter, their slim profile, their sapphire crystal and their 100-metre water resistance, these new Series 8 watches seem to have been designed as truly versatile timepieces: elegant enough to accompany a jacket, yet robust enough to be worn throughout the week.
A discreet but relevant evolution
CITIZEN is not overturning the Series 8. The Japanese brand is instead refining the formula. The reduction in diameter and, above all, in thickness responds to an underlying market trend that is seeing the return of better-proportioned mechanical watches that are easier to wear.

This evolution appears particularly coherent for a collection whose identity rests precisely on the balance between functionality, modernity and Japanese elegance. The presence of the calibre 9051, its magnetic resistance and its operation at 4 Hz simultaneously allow it to retain credible technical substance.
The CITIZEN Series 8 NB6080-51W, offered with its green dial, is announced at a price of 895 euros. The two-tone NB6084-50A version, with a silvery dial and yellow-gold-coloured plated elements, will be sold at 945 euros. Their launch in France is scheduled for July 2026 through a selection of the brand’s partners.

At under 1,000 euros, these two references bring together a carefully worked construction, an in-house mechanical movement, antimagnetic protection and particularly up-to-date proportions. An evolution in finesse, in both the literal and figurative sense, that may well make the Series 8 even more appealing for everyday wear.

Frequently asked questions
They are the NB6080-51W, with an all-steel case and a textured green dial, and the NB6084-50A, a two-tone version with a silvery dial and yellow-gold-coloured plating on the bezel and crown guards. Both join the Series 8 line in July 2026.
Both share a stainless-steel case measuring 39.5 mm in diameter and just 10.4 mm thick — around 1.2 mm slimmer than the previous 40 mm Ice Blue model. They feature an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, a transparent screwed case-back and 100 m (10 bar) water resistance.
Both are driven by CITIZEN’s in-house mechanical calibre 9051, an automatic movement that can also be hand-wound. It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), offers about 42 hours of power reserve, has 24 jewels, a stop-seconds function and a date, with a stated accuracy of -10 to +20 seconds per day.
Yes. The calibre 9051 resists magnetic fields of up to 16,000 A/m, keeping its performance when about one centimetre from a field-generating device — a useful feature in a daily life full of smartphones, computers and tablets.
The green-dial NB6080-51W is priced at 895 euros and the two-tone NB6084-50A at 945 euros. Both stay under 1,000 euros and are available from July 2026 through a selection of CITIZEN partners in France.
