Fascinating to watch, the tourbillon has become the symbol of watchmaking mastery. Here is the essential background to understand it, followed by what we cover of its news.
A stroke of genius. The tourbillon was patented in 1801 by Abraham-Louis Breguet, one of the greatest watchmakers in history. The idea: enclose the balance, the hairspring and the escapement in a cage that rotates on itself, in order to average out the rate deviations caused by gravity when the watch stays in a single position, as in a pocket watch.
Spectacular developments. In the 20th century, watchmaker Alfred Helwig developed the flying tourbillon, whose cage is supported on one side only, for a purer visual effect. Modern manufactures have since multiplied the variations: multi axis tourbillons, high frequency tourbillons, or ones combined with other complications, constantly pushing the limits of miniaturisation.
A showcase of craftsmanship. While its practical value on a wristwatch is debatable, the tourbillon remains an exercise in style and precision that highlights a manufacture's finishing and ingenuity. Today it embodies the pinnacle of the watchmaker's art.
