Briston Streamliner Kennedy: casual chic for everyday wear

With its new Streamliner Kennedy Quartz and « Full Or », Briston is pursuing an idea that has worked rather well for it: to offer a watch that is immediately recognisable, elegant enough to go with a jacket and relaxed enough never to look too dressed up. All of it starting from 460 euros. A certain French idea of the daily watch. There are watches you keep for special occasions. Others you choose above all for sport, travel or holidays. And then there are the ones you simply ask to be there, every morning, without having to think about it any further.

A white shirt? It works. A polo, jeans and a pair of sneakers? Again, yes. A slightly dressier jacket to round off the day over a drink or a dinner? Still works. This is probably where one of the main appeals of the new Briston Streamliner Kennedy lies. No need to overdo it. They have enough personality to stand out on the wrist, yet know how to stay in their place. A rather precious quality, when all is said and done, for a watch meant to accompany everyday life.

A Briston is always recognisable

Briston belongs to that category of brands whose creations can generally be identified without needing to read the name on the dial. The tortoiseshell-style cellulose acetate has a lot to do with it, of course. On these new Kennedy models, it once again dresses the sides of the case. Crafted in Italy and then polished by hand, it brings warmth to an architecture that might otherwise seem very restrained. The two side screws also take part in this distinctive construction combining metal and acetate.

And it is precisely this contrast that works. The square design brings a certain rigour. The steel gives it its structure. The acetate immediately breaks up that seriousness with its shades and its depth. This is how a classic watch avoids becoming classic. The crown, set at 12 o’clock and topped with a lapis lazuli cabochon, adds that small, almost pointless detail, and therefore absolutely essential, that makes up the charm of an object you want to keep looking at.

36 mm: probably the ideal size for everyday wear

The big news is the arrival of the Streamliner Kennedy Grand Modèle Quartz. Its case measures 36 x 36 mm for a thickness of just 10 mm. On a square watch, that already amounts to enough presence on the wrist without tipping into ostentation. Briston offers four dial colours: black, silvery white, royal blue and English green.

The two-tier construction is particularly interesting. Openworked Roman and Arabic numerals sit side by side around a finely guilloché central section, while a railway-track minute ring structures the whole. The dauphine hands are fitted with Super-LumiNova C1 inserts. A neo-retro composition, admittedly, but one that avoids pastiche. And above all, four colours that change the personality of the watch quite radically.

The silvery white plays the card of luminous elegance. The black becomes more graphic. The royal blue brings just the right amount of colour. As for the English green, paired with the tortoiseshell and possibly a matching strap, it probably has the little extra bit of charm needed to turn a reasonable watch into a far less reasonable purchase.

Yes, it is quartz. So what?

We might as well tackle the subject right away. This Kennedy is powered by a Swiss Ronda Powertech 582 quartz movement.

Two hands. No date. No complication meant to fill up the dial. Simply the hours and the minutes. And for a watch conceived as a genuine daily watch, the solution is far from absurd. It stays ready to go when you open the box or the drawer. It calls for no resetting after a few days of neglect. The calibre runs at 32,768 Hz and Briston announces around three years of battery life. It is sometimes worth remembering that a watch does not necessarily need a mechanical escapement to be interesting. Watchmaking is also a matter of design, of proportions, of materials and, above all, of pleasure worn on the wrist. And on that ground, the Streamliner Kennedy has a few arguments to make.

Leather today, steel tomorrow

Another important element when a watch aims to become the one you wear often: its ability to change register easily. The Kennedy Grand Modèle can take two-piece straps in alligator-embossed calf leather, offered in black, brown, navy blue or English green. The quick-change system lets you alter the look of the watch without any tools.

But the real surprise could come from the steel bracelet developed specially by Briston. Polished central links, vertically brushed H-shaped elements, a bracelet integrated into the design of the case: in this configuration, the Kennedy sheds part of its dressy side to take on a more contemporary, almost sport-chic look. And this is probably how it best expresses its potential as an everyday watch. Leather with a shirt. Steel with a polo. And no need to switch watches between the two.

And what if you want a little more sparkle?

Briston is also taking advantage of this new season to expand the Petit Modèle and Moyen Modèle with new « Full Or » versions.

Two sizes are offered: 25 x 25 mm and 30 x 30 mm, this time with a full yellow gold or rose gold PVD treatment on the metal parts of the case. The tortoiseshell remains visible on the sides and cleverly tempers the sparkle of the metal. These four new references also have an interesting particularity: they are assembled in France. Briston pairs them with new straps in satin-finish cowhide leather made with the French supplier Rochet. The tobacco, ivory or grey shades seen in the images further reinforce this very sartorial approach, without tipping over into the ceremonial watch.

Inside, the calibre changes: the Petit and Moyen Modèles use the Ronda Normtech 751, also Swiss, whose announced battery life this time reaches seven years. Enough to forget the very existence of the battery for a few seasons.

A watch that does not force you to pick a side

This is perhaps, in the end, what Briston does best. The French brand does not really try to make restrained watches. But it does not fall into gratuitous eccentricity either. This Kennedy can be retro without being vintage, dressy without being ceremonious, colourful without being flashy and original without becoming hard to wear. In short, a watch different enough to be noticed, but easy enough to live with to be worn every day.

A daily watch, then. And probably a good definition of casual chic.

Prices that add to the pleasure

One element remains that makes the whole thing particularly coherent: the price. The Streamliner Kennedy Grand Modèle Quartz on leather is offered at 460 €. The versions fully treated in rose gold PVD are listed at 490 €, while the model fitted with the steel bracelet reaches 525 €. The new « Full Or » models, for their part, are offered at 460 € in 25 mm and 510 € in 30 mm.

In a watchmaking world where four-figure prices are quickly reached, being able to treat yourself to a watch with a genuine aesthetic identity, a Swiss quartz movement and details as distinctive as the acetate sides or the lapis lazuli cabochon crown for less than 550 euros deserves to be highlighted. Because an everyday watch must also be able to be worn every day. Without worry. Without ceremony. And above all without ever having to be embarrassed by what you wear on your wrist.
