Jaeger-LeCoultre unveils a new Polaris Date

Some watches evolve without ever losing their identity. The Polaris Date by Jaeger-LeCoultre belongs to that category. True to an instantly recognizable aesthetic, it returns today in a new, more compact interpretation of 40 mm, designed to offer greater comfort and versatility without giving up the sporty character that forms the DNA of the collection.

With this new version, the Manufacture in Le Sentier continues an evolution begun several years ago: that of a sports watch capable of combining functionality, robustness and horological refinement.

Polaris, a sporting story born in the 1960s

To understand the personality of the contemporary Polaris, one has to go back to 1968.

That year, Jaeger-LeCoultre unveiled the Memovox Polaris, a creation that marked a new milestone in the sporting history of the Manufacture. With dimensions then considered particularly imposing, it quickly stood out through its singular design and its character as a diving watch.

The Memovox Polaris did not simply adopt the codes of a tool watch. It asserted a genuine aesthetic vision, bold for its time, that would lastingly shape the identity of the Maison.

When Jaeger-LeCoultre revived the name “Polaris” in 2018, the Manufacture chose not to merely reproduce an icon of the past. It transposed its spirit into a collection intended for contemporary lifestyles.

The Polaris then became the expression of a new generation of Jaeger-LeCoultre sports watches, combining technical performance, practical functions and timeless elegance.

A more compact Polaris Date

It is within this continuity that the new Polaris Date makes its appearance.

Its steel case now adopts a diameter of 40 mm for a thickness kept to 12,9 mm. An evolution that may seem discreet on paper, but that noticeably transforms the experience on the wrist.

This reduction in size allows the Polaris Date to gain in comfort and versatility while retaining the proportions that give it its character.

The silhouette remains instantly identifiable, with its clean lines, its domed crystal framed by a slim bezel and its alternation of brushed and polished surfaces.

Two crowns complete this architecture. The first handles the traditional functions of the watch, while the second, deliberately off-center, is used to operate the internal rotating bezel.

The latter is one of the most distinctive elements of the Polaris. It allows a countdown of a predefined duration to be set, a feature drawn directly from the heritage of the Maison’s diving watches.

The whole is completed by water resistance to 20 bar, or 200 meters.

A sports watch designed for everyday life

The new Polaris Date perfectly illustrates the way Jaeger-LeCoultre approaches the sports watch today.

The aim is not to turn the watch into a radical instrument reserved exclusively for a sporting practice. The approach consists rather in offering a creation capable of keeping pace with an active lifestyle while retaining the refinement expected of a watch from the Manufacture.

The new 40 mm diameter fully contributes to this philosophy.

Easier to wear, more discreet on the wrist and always sufficiently present to keep its character, the Polaris Date thus gains in versatility.

Its blue canvas strap, closed by a double folding clasp, further accentuates this sporty and relaxed personality.

A blue dial at the heart of a signature architecture

The dial remains one of the most spectacular elements of this new Polaris Date.

Jaeger-LeCoultre retains the concentric-circle architecture that characterizes the collection. This construction gives the dial a distinctive depth and naturally organizes the various indications.

The imposing Arabic numerals sit alongside elongated trapezoidal indexes, while the skeletonized hands reinforce the contemporary identity of the watch.

All these elements receive a Super-LumiNova® treatment, ensuring excellent legibility in dimly lit environments.

But it is above all the work carried out on the surface of the dial that draws attention.

A gradient achieved through meticulous work

The dark blue lacquered dial owes nothing to chance.

Its creation begins with a grained and sunburst surface, onto which seven layers of colored lacquer are then applied, followed by 35 additional translucent layers.

The whole is then meticulously polished by hand.

This particularly demanding process makes it possible to obtain a double gradient that gives the dial a remarkable depth. The light thus evolves gradually across its surface, revealing different shades of blue depending on the viewing angle.

This visual richness contrasts with the restraint of the overall architecture and perfectly illustrates the Jaeger-LeCoultre approach: a sophistication that is discovered rather than imposed.

The Calibre 899, a movement designed for an active life

Through the sapphire crystal case back, the Polaris Date reveals its mechanical engine.

The watch is equipped with the automatic Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 899, entirely designed, manufactured and assembled within the Manufacture.

This movement offers a power reserve of 70 hours, an autonomy particularly welcome for a watch meant to accompany an active daily life.

This movement thus combines the pursuit of performance with careful finishing, in keeping with the horological approach of Jaeger-LeCoultre.

Behind a controlled sporty aesthetic there is therefore a genuine Manufacture movement, designed entirely within the horological ecosystem of the Maison.

A new chapter in the history of the Polaris

With this new 40 mm Polaris Date, Jaeger-LeCoultre does not upend the codes of a collection that has become emblematic. The Manufacture chooses instead to refine them.

The reduced diameter, the contained thickness, the graduated blue dial, the internal bezel and the automatic Manufacture movement make up a watch that is at once sporty, elegant and versatile.

This evolution also responds to a strong trend in contemporary watchmaking: that of sports watches with controlled dimensions, capable of keeping a real presence while offering increased everyday comfort.

More than fifty years after the birth of the Memovox Polaris, the spirit therefore remains intact. But the watch has changed with its era.
